Such was the demand that it altered the very ethos of Nokia. The company metamorphosed from being a fast moving and innovative vendor, to one that became sluggish and arrogant.

The result was that the once-mighty Nokia was slain by unheard of upstarts that recognised consumers were looking for something new. One of the leaders in this revolution–if not the standard bearer–was Apple with its iPhone.

The demand for this particular product caused operators to rush to California to gain access to this transformational device, with the result that it boosted their businesses, but also made them beholden to a company with an unusual approach to partnerships.

Operators are now apparently complaining that Apple is treating them as very junior partners, and dictating which particular hoops each mobile service provider should jump through–and when. According to the Scandinavian consultancy Northstream, operators are being told to agree to numerous NDAs to satisfy Apple’s draconian supply conditions. “When we hear about operators and how Apple treats them–they’ve never seen anything like that before in the industry,” said Bengt Nordström of Northstream. “It’s always been a buyer’s market.”

Having jumped into the fire, operators are now keen for Nokia to appear phoenix-like from its self-inflicted wounds and challenge Apple with its new Lumia brand and other smartphones.

Given the level to which Nokia has sunk, and that almost none of the former management walk the corridors, there might just be a chance of sending a faint ripple of worry through the offices of Cupertino-based Apple. –Paul

The rumour is that the new iPhone 4S received its name, the “S” portion, to remember the late Steve Jobs. Others believe it’s simply continues the tradition of a previous iPhone and symbolizes “Speed” due to the A5 dual core processor. In addition, it’s also heavily rumoured that this was the last iPhone that Jobs had a part in creating, making millions of customers flock to purchase it simply to remember him… but according some analysts it’s the next iPhone that will feature the Jobs golden touch.

The “iPhone 5″ is expected to be a be announced during their WWDC next Summer and will be a “complete redesign”, most likely with the bigger display, thinner and be LTE-capable. CNET is reporting their source says the “iPhone 5 was the “very large project that Steve dedicated all of his time to. He was not that involved in the 4S because his time was limited”. Finally, analyst Ashok Kumar from Rodman & Renshaw echos similar thoughts with a note to his clients that the iPhone 5 will be a “cult classic” because it “was the last project that Steve Jobs was intimately involved with from concept to final design. For that reason…this product will establish the high water mark for iPhone volumes”.

As for the new iPhone 4S, Apple should be coming out tomorrow with opening weekend sales results. Some are expecting the numbers to hit 4 million.

Yet another patent infringement lawsuit has arrived. This time it’s Arizona-based iCloud Communications suing Apple for infringing on their trademark over the use of the name “iCloud”.

iCloud Communications notes that since Apple’s WWDC the term “iCloud” has become associated with Apple, rather than them. The filing doesn’t show what monetary amount iCloud Communications is seeking, but according to the filing they are requesting Apple to stop using “all labels, signs, prints, insignia, letterhead, brochures, business cards, invoices and any other written or recorded material or advertisements” that have the iCloud name it. In addition, the court doc states that “Upon information and belief, at the time Apple elected to adopt “iCloud”for its cloud computing telecommunications and data services, Apple was aware of or was willfully blind to iCloud Communications’ use of and rights in the iCloud Marks”

Pretty sure Apple easily elected to use the term iCloud. A simple Google search by can find it was already thought of years ago.

Apple (NASDAQ:AAPL) unveiled the next generation of its popular iPhone, called the iPhone 4, at the company’s Worldwide Developers Conference in San Francisco. The new version of the device, which now features a front-facing camera for video calling, HD video capture and several other hardware improvements, is the company’s latest effort to keep its momentum going in the mobile market.

Apple CEO Steve Jobs appeared at the event in his customary black turtleneck and jeans to deliver the presentation. Much of the suspense was taken out of this year’s annual iPhone unveiling back in April after the tech blog Gizmodo published photos and descriptions of a prototype iPhone. “Believe me, you ain’t seen this,” Jobs said, according to reports.

The new device, which goes on sale June 24 and will come in black and white, will be 9 for the 16 GB version and 9 for the 32 GB version with a two-year contract from AT&T Mobility (NYSE:T), which is remaining the exclusive carrier of the iPhone for now. AT&T said current iPhone customers who are eligible for an upgrade before the end of this year will be able to get the iPhone 4 for the 9 and 9 prices when they sign up for a new two-year contract.

The company is getting rid of the iPhone 3G, and the 3GS is going to be on sale for beginning June 24. The phone will initially be available in the U.S., France, Germany, the United Kingdom and Japan, Jobs said, though more countries will be added in July, August and September.

The video calling feature, called FaceTime, will work only from one iPhone 4 to another and only over WiFi in 2010. It will not be working on 3G cellular networks. “It’s WiFi-only in 2010, we’re working with the cellular providers to get things ready,” Jobs said, according to reports.

Jobs had to halt his presentation when his iPhone 4 could not connect to the Web. “I’m afraid we have a problem and I’m not going to be able to show you much today,” he said. Someone in the audience yelled out, “Try Verizon (NYSE:VZ)!” Jobs asked audience members to disconnect from WiFi before he was able to demo some of the Web features of the phone.

The iPhone 4 has a 3.5-inch display and runs on Apple’s A4 processor, which also powers the iPad. The device is 25 percent thinner than the iPhone 3GS, and has a glass front and back and a stainless-steel band that functions as the antenna system. The new screen has a 960 x 640 resolution, which quadruples the number of pixels available on the screen, which Apple calls a “retina display.” The display sharpens text, pictures and video, Jobs said. The iPhone 4 also has a larger battery that extends the device’s battery life. The phone’s camera has been upgraded to a 5-megapixel camera, with 5X digital zoom and can also record HD video at 720p/30fps.

Jobs also said that for .99, customers can download iMovie to the iPhone 4, which allows them to record, edit and post videos directly on the phone. The phone also comes with a gyroscope, which will allow developers to develop games and other apps to take advantage of the new motion controls.

Apple sold 8.75 million iPhones in the quarter, representing a 131 percent increase from the 3.79 million it sold in the year-ago quarter, and slightly higher than the 8.7 million it sold in the last quarter. According to IDC, handset vendors around the globe shipped 54.7 million smartphone units in the quarter, up 56.7 percent from the year-ago quarter, and outpacing growth in the overall handset market, which grew 21.7 percent.

The company is taking advantage of the surge in smartphone sales–the company’s global smartphone market share surged upward from 10.9 percent a year ago to 16.1 percent in the first quarter of 2010. Apple still trails behind Nokia (NYSE:NOK) and Research In Motion (NASDAQ:RIMM) in global smartphone market share.
