• Android apps being submitted to BlackBerry App World without developer permission?

One of the best reasons to upgrade your Playbook to OS 2.0 is its support of Android apps through an emulation engine called the Android Player. The use of such an app is fairly seamless, since it opens in a full screen window that incorporates many of the existing Playbook features such as swiping down to make the menu bar appear.

But there seems to be something fishy going on behind the scenes. Dolphin Browser HD, one of the most popular third-party browsers in the Android Market, was made available for download by a company called Handster. Turns out, though, Handster had nothing to do with the development of Dolphin, and merely packaged and submitted it to the BlackBerry App World in spite of of developer MoboTap. Handster seems to be submitting both free and paid Android apps to the App World irrespective of whether the original developer intended for it to be available.

Handster is a publishing company owned by none other than Opera, the creators of its own popular Android browser. MoboTap has expressed concern over this practice and is looking to have Dolphin Browser HD removed from the App World listings. I had a chance to test it myself and found performance to be about as poor as possible on a tablet, coming nowhere close to the fluidity of the native Playbook OS 2.0 browser.

MoboTap claimed, “We do not condone Handster submitting our Dolphin Browser app to BlackBerry’s App World for us and are currently working to take it down and assure Handster will not submit our app for us again. We will assess developing for BlackBerry when the time is right.” We think that is the correct strategy, and it’s unfortunate that the Android capabilities of the Playbook are being taken advantage of by publishers with dubious intentions.

Neither Handster or RIM have responded to calls for why third-party publishers are allowed to repackage and submit existing Android apps, but we’ll let you know if they do.

  • Should developers localize their apps?

One of the most neglected aspects of mobile game development is localization, and localization can be costly, ranging in price dramatically depending on how much text or dialogue there is in a game. In his latest column for FierceDeveloper, David Marino, the CFO and co-founder of Hidden Variable Studios, discusses the benefits that localization for specific markets can bring to mobile gaming and application developers in general. Chief among them is that localization helps reinforce the impression that the game or app was carefully crafted and tailored for each market, rather than simply “mass-produced” for worldwide consumption. Additionally, it allows the game or app to build credibility by demonstrating that developers care about the customs and sensitivities of other cultures. Commentary

  • HOW TO: Make iPhone apps for a profit and sell on the AppStore!

    iPhone apps for profit?

Do you want to develop the next “big thing” in the iPhone world? That would be the next app… The apps you see in the apple iPhone commercials were made by someone, many people with no computer programming experience at all. So why not you! Why can’t you make that BIG MONEY?

    THERE’S AN APP FOR THAT

The past few years has witnessed a change in the ecosystem of the wireless world.
Time was that cell phone companies were responsible for selling games and applications to their customers.
These apps were programmer in the java language using J2RE. Not only were these apps hard to develop, they were also severly limited due to several different factors:

    - compatability with multiple phones
    - limited hardware
    - small screen size

When apple launched the iPhone in 2007 and the AppStore a year later, the world of mobile development forever changed.

    A GAME CHANGER

The AppStore is an integrated distribution system for developers to sell applications on the iPhone, iPod Touch and iPad. It is pre-installed on all of these devices and is dead easy to use.

Since it’s launch in 2008, in only a year and a half over TWO BILLION APPS have been downloaded from the AppStore and the numbers keep increasing day by day!

And it will only GET BIGGER with the iPad coming in the next few months!

    THE APPLE METHOD

Ultimately apple makes it relatively simple to become an app developer. You need to join the apple developer program and program your apps.

    You need three things:

    1. An idea
    2. An annual subscription to Apples development program
    3. A computer to program your app on (Windows or Mac will do)

After you write and code your app, submit it to Apple for approval and wait to get listed on the Appstore and the money to start to come in.

    BUT I’M NO COMPUTER PROGRAMMER!!

Fear not because I’m about to tell you the secret of how anyone can learn to write and sell an app on the AppStore.
It makes it NEARLY GUARANTEED that you will be able to

    A. Make BIG $$$
    B. Start on a real career as an app programmer.

Who knows, maybe you will be the next big thing! Most downloaded apps do make a profit.
Even selling an app for a dollar and making .50 profit after your comission still NETS YOU 00.00!

    HOW TO GET STARTED:

If this sounds good to you, and you found this article useful, then you need to check out the secret so many app developers know but don’t share…

I know it can be done and you don’t need to be a computer genius either!

Android Market Paid apps in Froyo

Update: And just like that, Google says its fix is in place and developers are seeing their apps again. Huzzah! [Google]

Original: Apps have been disappearing from the Android Market for a good many of you (and us) for a few days now, and you’ve been screaming for answers. And we hear you. And, believe it or not, Google’s heard you, too. Here’s what Google told us about the problem:

"We are aware of an app visibility issue with certain recent devices. We believe it to be a device configuration problem and are working on a workaround."

We know, we know. You guys and gals won’t be happy until the apps are back in the Market like they should be. But remember that there are thousands and thousands and thousands of you using the Android Market, and we don’t wan things to get worse. (But that said, let’s get this fixed, Google, m’kay?)
