Samsung Galaxy S Update 2 Android 2.2 Froyo: Epic 4G, Fascinate, Vibrant and Captivate Coming Soon?

Koreanscreenshots.jpgThe Samsung Labs in Korea have finished testing the update to the Samsung Galaxy S phones to Android 2.2 Froyo. A leaked email in Korean apparently confirms that Samsung is done testing Android 2.2 and that the Korean binaries will be released this week.  Binaries are the code that makes the software work.

Although some bloggers are saying that the it means that Froyo is on its way to all the Samsung Galaxy S smartphones in the US including the Samsung Epic 4G, Samsung Fascinate, Samsung Captivate and Samsung Vibrant . There is no proof yet, that the carriers have tested the update.

After the manufacturer sends the software update to the carriers, the carriers then test the update and prepare it for over-the-air updates.

The fact that Samsung has readied the update to Android 2.2 is still good news, because a T-Mobile forum post noted that the Android 2.2 update had been delayed. A copy of the email appears at the end of this article.  If you read Koren it would be nice if you contacted ediitor[at}wirelessandmobilenews.com with any important details.

The Samsung Epic 4G began getting the interim “3G-fixer” update earlier this week. The Samsung Vibrant started receiving an OTA update with GPS fixes and Samsung Media Hub on Thursday.
The Samsung Epic 4G received an update to use Media Hub in September.

Many of the Samsung Galaxy S phones were named in Wireless and Mobile News’ Review of Reviews Top Ten Best Android an’ Droid Phones Now an’ Later.

for a social hub as well as a media hub for online viewing.
Differences come in the amount of internal storage, size of the microSD
card included, mobile hotspot capabilities, keyboard style and the speed
    of data networks.

    Samsung Galaxy S: Samsung Epic 4G Update Fixes 3G, Wi-Fi, Email & MP3 Glitches

SamsungEpic4gwiMAX.jpgSprint has released the details of the update to the Samsung Galaxy S, Samsung Epic 4G that began rolling out over-the-air today.  The update S:D700.0.5S.DI18 fixes the reported cap on 3G upload speeds, problems with Wi-Fi, standby battery drain and the lag in large email upload speed.  After the update, Amazon MP3 downloads in 4G.

This OTA will be pushed in stages and will be rolled out to users over several days.

Users will receive a notificiation.  A System update screen will prompt the user to ‘Install now’ or ‘Install later’.  If ‘Install later’ is selected, a reminder will be sent once or twice a day to install the update.  If ‘Install now’ is selected, the phone will power down and then reboot.

The update will take approximately 7-8 minutes to download and 7-8 minutes to install.

Your Samsung Epic 4G must be on software version DI07 to perform the update to DI18.  If you are still on DG17 or DG27, a Sprint Service and Repair Center should be able to update your Samsung Epic 4G to DI07.  The update from DI07 to DI18 is not yet available to the Service and Repair Centers.  As soon as it is available, this post will be updated.

The Samsung Epic 4G received excellent reviews and is the only Samsung Galaxy S smartphone to have full slide-out QWERTY keyboard.  The Epic has a front-facing camera for video conferencing and uses Sprint’s 4G data network for faster data streams.  It also has a camera flash and mobile Wi-Fi hotspot capabilities (unlimited for .99 a month).  4G connectivity to WiMAX comes from a ANADIGICS AWT6264 chipset.

All Samsung Galaxy S phones have a super-fast 1GHz hummingbird processor with efficient 3D graphics processing, Super AMOLED 4-inch touchsreen, 5 megapixel camera, microSD, Wi-Fi, and Android 2.1.  The differences are in the amount of memory, keyboards and carriers.

Samsung Electronics expects to sell up to 25 million smartphones by the close of 2010.
They have already shipped 1 million Samsung Galaxy S phones to the United States.

Yesterday I finally signed up for apples MobileMe service. After successfully using it on my Mac and iPhone whole connected to wifi, I have been unable to upload a single image over 3G or EDGE data yet.

I have to chalk this up to poor AT&T data performance.

    More AT&T fail.
