  • HOW TO: grab a single frame from a video on an iPhone 3gs

Although the iPhone 3gs natively takes spectacular video, you cannot simply take a frame grab but there is an easy solution that involves no jailbreaking or hacking.

    Step 1:
select the video you want a frame from in your camera roll and turn your phone on its side to enter landscape mode (so it’s wider than tall) the video automatically fills the entire iPhone screen.

    Step 2:
use the scrub bat up top to skip to the frame you want to capture. Pause the video on this point

    Step 3:
tap on the screen anywhere to make the video controls dissapear and all you can see just the video.

    Step 4:
hold the sleep/wake button on top of the phone and then press the home button on the front of the iPhone and a screenshot is taken and saved to the camera roll.

You now had a still image of the frame on the movie you want!

I isn’t the same an iPhone photo though the resolution is less and it’s in PNG format but unless you get the photo on a computer and use a professional video editing program it’s the closest you can get.

Also the iPhone video is only 640×480 resolution so it won’t create anymore than a VGA resolution still from a video.

  • M2M: A blast from the past gets renewed attention

    Sue Marek

Lately there’s been much ado about the machine-to-machine communications area and the potential it holds for the wireless industry. There are several reasons for the renewed attention: device module prices are declining, wireless networks are faster and the various vertical groups have a better understanding of wireless networks and how they can help their businesses. But perhaps the biggest reason behind the renewed push in M2M is that the nation’s wireless operators are finally seeing the growth potential and focusing their attention on this area.

It’s interesting that we are talking about M2M again. I remember writing articles about wireless telemetry and asset tracking for industries like long-haul trucking and meter reading more than a decade ago, when wireless verticals were considered “niche” markets that offered interesting applications. Today, it’s impossible to classify these M2M verticals as niche markets when you consider the growth potential they hold for the industry. Berg Research estimates that the number of wireless M2M connections will grow at an annual rate of 25.6 percent to reach 187.1 million connections in 2014.

Of course, long-haul trucking and meter reading are just a few of the industries that can use wireless technology to make their businesses better and more efficient. Mobile health and smart grids are two areas that are getting a lot of attention today because of the potential they hold. But there are still a lot of uncertainties about both. On the mobile health front, patient and doctor willingness to implement these solutions is tied directly to whether insurance companies will reimburse for these solutions. Meanwhile, in the smart grid space, President Obama’s stimulus package has helped propel the industry, and there are now 100 smart grid projects planned to launch in the next five years. But there are regulatory hurdles, and utility companies are notoriously slow moving when it comes to technology.

FierceWireless decided to take a deep-dive into the M2M space and look specifically at certain vertical markets as well as provide some insight into the overall potential for this market. Check out our latest ebook, “The M2M Opportunity,” here. –Sue

  • iPhone Quotes for 2Day from iSuppi and Ovum

SteveJobsatWWDC.jpgSteve Jobs is expected to announced the new iPhone 4, today at WDDC. Some analysts have compiled some factoids and opinions. His announcement will start at 10:00 PDT.

iSuppli Corp, reminded us, Apple in the first quarter shipped 8.8 million iPhones, giving it a 3.04 percent share of the market for all kinds of cell phones. Company shipments rose by 0.2 percent from 8.7 million in the fourth quarter of 2009, giving Apple the No. 6 position in the market in the first quarter, up from ninth place in the fourth quarter of 2009.

Apple’s strong iPhone sales are boosting its Macintosh sales. The company was the only U.S. PC OEM that managed to outperform the PC market in the first quarter. Apple’s PC shipments rose by 32.4 percent from a year earlier.

Adam Leach, principal analyst at Ovum, said: “In three short years the iPhone has become the industry benchmark for high-end smartphones and the fourth generation device will only reinforce this view. The success of the iPhone is down to a number of interrelated factors. First, Apple created a device with a genuinely unique user experience, one that consumers still find engaging and easy to use. Second, Apple wrapped this user experience into a well designed and sleek form factor. Third, the company created an end-to-end platform that integrates Apple’s own services (eg iTunes) as well as third party services onto the device (through the hugely successful App Store).
“But perhaps more important subsequently has been Apple’s ability to build and motivate a large and active developer community that produces content, in the form of apps, exclusively for the device. This ecosystem of developers and the value they bring to the platform, as well as to consumers, is the hardest aspect of the iPhone proposition for other companies to replicate, especially given the reluctance of developers to support multiple software platforms. It is also the reason Apple is so keen to protect this community from disintermediation by the open web and hence its rather tough stance with Adobe over Flash.

“However, the iPhone 4G faces much stiffer competition than its predecessors. The rise of Google Android over the last two years has been phenomenal and is allowing manufacturers to create appealing alternatives to the iPhone; critically at cheaper prices. These handsets are more than just iPhone clones. The risk to Apple is that these devices offer greater freedom with available content and may prove more appealing, if it offers the right user and developer experience, than a device with Apple approved content only. This may ultimately be what puts the brakes on unlimited iPhone growth.”
