SamsungGalaxyTabsnip.JPGSamsung Mobile is selling a lot of phones and tablets.  Samsung sold 71.4 million handsets during the third quarter, an increase of 19 percent year-on-year.  Average sales price also increased 14 percent quarter-on-quarter to 2.

The rollout of Samsung’s flagship smartphones, Galaxy S and Wave, were the primary drivers of continued sales growth.

Since its introduction in June, Galaxy S has been launched in 90 countries and has been selected by 210 carriers worldwide.  Samsung projects sales of 10 million units by the end of 2010.

The Samsung Wave, which operates on Samsung’s open smartphone platform, bada, has also shipped more than two million units in 80 countries.  Samsung shipped 7 million Galaxy S phones and 2 million from Samsung’s Wave series.

The quarter was also marked by the launch of Samsung’s Android-powered Galaxy Tab, which will be available on 140 carriers globally, including all four major service providers in the United States.

In the fourth quarter, Samsung aims to increase its market share and maintain double-digit operating profit by meeting seasonal demand with an enhanced product mix of mass market smartphones, full-touch phones and the Samsung Galaxy Tab.
Samsung Galaxy S smartphones in the U.S. include the Samsung Epic 4G, Samsung Fascinate, Samsung Captivate and Samsung Vibrant.  You can see the differences in our Samsung Galaxy S comparison article.

Samsung Galaxy S owners are still waiting for an update to Android 2.2 Froyo.

The Samsung Galaxy Tab is coming form US Cellular, Verizon, Sprint, T-Mobile and AT&T.

Samsung Galaxy S Update 2 Android 2.2 Froyo: Epic 4G, Fascinate, Vibrant and Captivate Coming Soon?

      Posted by Admin

Koreanscreenshots.jpgThe Samsung Labs in Korea have finished testing the update to the Samsung Galaxy S phones to Android 2.2 Froyo. A leaked email in Korean apparently confirms that Samsung is done testing Android 2.2 and that the Korean binaries will be released this week.  Binaries are the code that makes the software work.

Although some bloggers are saying that the it means that Froyo is on its way to all the Samsung Galaxy S smartphones in the US including the Samsung Epic 4G, Samsung Fascinate, Samsung Captivate and Samsung Vibrant . There is no proof yet, that the carriers have tested the update.

After the manufacturer sends the software update to the carriers, the carriers then test the update and prepare it for over-the-air updates.

The fact that Samsung has readied the update to Android 2.2 is still good news, because a T-Mobile forum post noted that the Android 2.2 update had been delayed. A copy of the email appears at the end of this article.  If you read Koren it would be nice if you contacted ediitor[at}wirelessandmobilenews.com with any important details.

The Samsung Epic 4G began getting the interim “3G-fixer” update earlier this week. The Samsung Vibrant started receiving an OTA update with GPS fixes and Samsung Media Hub on Thursday.
The Samsung Epic 4G received an update to use Media Hub in September.

Many of the Samsung Galaxy S phones were named in Wireless and Mobile News’ Review of Reviews Top Ten Best Android an’ Droid Phones Now an’ Later.

    All Samsung Galaxy S phones
have a super-fast 1GHz hummingbird processor with efficient 3D graphics
processing, Super AMOLED 4-inch touchsreen, 5 megapixel camera,
microSD, Wi-Fi, and Android 2.1.  Samsung has added-on TouchWiz software
for a social hub as well as a media hub for online viewing.
Differences come in the amount of internal storage, size of the microSD
card included, mobile hotspot capabilities, keyboard style and the speed
    of data networks.

    Samsung Galaxy S: Samsung Epic 4G Update Fixes 3G, Wi-Fi, Email & MP3 Glitches

SamsungEpic4gwiMAX.jpgSprint has released the details of the update to the Samsung Galaxy S, Samsung Epic 4G that began rolling out over-the-air today.  The update S:D700.0.5S.DI18 fixes the reported cap on 3G upload speeds, problems with Wi-Fi, standby battery drain and the lag in large email upload speed.  After the update, Amazon MP3 downloads in 4G.

This OTA will be pushed in stages and will be rolled out to users over several days.

Users will receive a notificiation.  A System update screen will prompt the user to ‘Install now’ or ‘Install later’.  If ‘Install later’ is selected, a reminder will be sent once or twice a day to install the update.  If ‘Install now’ is selected, the phone will power down and then reboot.

The update will take approximately 7-8 minutes to download and 7-8 minutes to install.

Your Samsung Epic 4G must be on software version DI07 to perform the update to DI18.  If you are still on DG17 or DG27, a Sprint Service and Repair Center should be able to update your Samsung Epic 4G to DI07.  The update from DI07 to DI18 is not yet available to the Service and Repair Centers.  As soon as it is available, this post will be updated.

The Samsung Epic 4G received excellent reviews and is the only Samsung Galaxy S smartphone to have full slide-out QWERTY keyboard.  The Epic has a front-facing camera for video conferencing and uses Sprint’s 4G data network for faster data streams.  It also has a camera flash and mobile Wi-Fi hotspot capabilities (unlimited for .99 a month).  4G connectivity to WiMAX comes from a ANADIGICS AWT6264 chipset.

All Samsung Galaxy S phones have a super-fast 1GHz hummingbird processor with efficient 3D graphics processing, Super AMOLED 4-inch touchsreen, 5 megapixel camera, microSD, Wi-Fi, and Android 2.1.  The differences are in the amount of memory, keyboards and carriers.

Samsung Electronics expects to sell up to 25 million smartphones by the close of 2010.
They have already shipped 1 million Samsung Galaxy S phones to the United States.

Review Samsung Capitvate (Galaxy S) Review of Reviews

Samsung Captivate (Galaxy S) rated 4 out of 5 by Wireless and Mobile News’ Review of Reviews

Reviewers of the Samsung Captivate all agree that the Captivate captivates, and give it the accolade of being the best Android smartphone at AT&T right now.

Reviews all agreed that the Super AMOLED touchscreen is gorgeous, captivating and brilliant, you can even see the colors pop in bright sunlight.  The processor is fast, the added TouchWiz features can be helpful and the call quality is very good.

All the reviewers hated a few things you can’t use/install apps that are not from the Android Market, the camera lacks flash and the Samsung Captivate lacks Wi-Fi hotspot sharing like its top Android competitors(Droid X, HTC EVO 4G and Droid Incredible.)

The six axis acclerometer sensor makes screen mode changing very fast. In benchmark tests the speed of the Samsung Captivate was very fast and on AT&T’s 3G network slightly faster than the iPhone 4G. Like the iPhone 4, you can get attenuation (loss of signal strength) when you grip the Samsung Captivate fully with your hand.

There are four modes of text input ensuring that you will find a way to enter text that you like. The music player and ability to sync media with PCs were praised. All reviewers found the web browser to be fast but one pointed out that you can’t force the browser to show the desktop version of websites when a mobile version appears. Video capture was also praise, but reviewers wondered why you can’t use and HDMI cable like other Android superstars. You can however show video via Wi-Fi with DLNA.

Most reviewers compared the Samsung Captivate to the iPhone 4, some call it a good alternative while other stayed on the iPhone 4 fence.  Because of the many features of this Android powerhouse, you’ll have to see what features are the most important to you.  If you however sit out in the sun and web surf along with wave surf, this may be the best option for you.  The Samsung Captivate sells for 9 with a contract after rebates from AT&T. Don’t forget to use the AT&T Coupon-Link  Off AT&T Wireless with Plan for New Customers with a Contract.

AmazonWireless Beta offers the Samsung Captivate  with a new contract for .99 and 4.99 for renewing individual accounts. Note: this price only valid on the Amazon Wireless Beta website.

www.Wirefly.com is offering the Samsung Captivate for for new customers with a contract and 9.99 for renewing customers.

Bonnie Cha at CNET Rated the Samsung Captivate 4 out of 5 or the gorgeous AMOLED touch screen, 1GHz Humming birdprocessor, great call quality, many wireless options and HD video capture.  As with all Android AT&T smartphones, owners can’t sideload/install non Android Market Apps, Unfortunately, the camera lacks a flash.  She does call the best AT&T Android device, now with great performance.  She found the design to be lackluster but solid.  The 4 inch touchscreen with 400 x800 resolution is great looking, crisp, responsive and fast. The six axis acclerometer comes in handy for quick gaming.  Samsung TouchWiz added some handy on screen shortcuts, the social networking is improved. It’s quad-band world phone but can’t be used as mobile hotspot. Although it’s supposed to combine contacts from various sources, she had to hand link some accounts.  AT&T added software and services come with an additional cost.  The speaker phone sounded hollow.  The web browser was good and the Captivate felt fast.

Sascha Segan at PCMag rated the Samsung Captivate 4 out 5 for its fast processor, beautiful screen,  PC syncing options, calling the top Android smartphone at AT&T.  He didn’t like that you can only use Android Market apps and the absence of a camera flash.  He found the touchscreen thrilling and it didn’t wash out in bright sunlight.  It can use 802.11 b/g/n Wi-Fi.   He did find a death-grip of attenuation on when he held the bottom of the Samsung Captivate. He found call quality to be decent and liked the noise cancellation. For all it’s features it had goo battery life. The are four ways to enter text, two handwriting recongition programs, a T9 keypad and swipe.  The processor came out faster than the Snapdragon in benchmark tests. Merging of email, and calendars worked for him well with Samsung Kies.  He didnt’ like the social networking for Twitter and Facebook because they don’t auto update more than once an hour. Media Syncing works on PCs only.  The camera took decent photos. He found the social networking to be better than the iPhone, free Google voice-guided navigation/directions, and super colorful screen.

Mark Spoonauer at Laptopmag rated the Samsung Captivate 3.5 out of 5 for the super vibrant AMOLED touchscreen, daily briefings, HD camcorder, audio player and strong call quality.  He didn’t like the lack of a camera flash, lack of mobile Wi-Fi hotspots, and inability to sideload apps.  The Samsung media hub for downloading videos/movies isn’t ready yet,  He liked the still poacketable size, larger than the iPhone but smaller than the Droid X.   It lacks an HDMI cable but you can stream video via DLNA. He wrote good things about the TouchWiz interface. The process was fast but had some delays. Downloads on 3G were slightly faster than on an iPhone 4. In the browser, you can’t force desktop versions to download.  The coolest utility app that comes on the Captivate is the Write and Go app, you take a note and then decide later where to send it. For Wi-Fi file transfer there’s AllShare, which requires selecting the files first. The music player is very good and supports 5.1 sound. In order to use Google maps you have download it and another speech-to-text app. The captivate is the best Android phone on AT&T

Yes, folks, the Galaxy S is ‘landing soon’

    Samsung Galaxy S

Yes, folks, it’s all but official that the Samsung Galaxy S (see our hardware and software hands-ons) is coming the U.S. Only questions are when and to which carrier. (OK, those are pretty big questions.) But the flying saucer we got says it’s "Landing soon," and there’s a new U.S. website up and running, so things are definitely on the move. If you’re in the mood for some unsubstantiated rumors, TMoNews says it’s heard of a possible July 21 launch on T-Mobile, and there’s a Verizon rumor going around, plus that one on AT&T. But there’s nothing to back up most of that other than a big pile of salt, so … Stay tuned, everyone! [Samsung]

Samsung Sending Out Teasers for Galaxy S!

If you have been following any of my posts, or listening to any of the Android Guys Thursday Night Podcasts, you know that I am holding my breath for when the Samsung Galaxy S drops for purchase with T-Mo, my carrier of choice.

There have been many rumors as to the exact release date in the US for the Galaxy S, but no hard date.  It has been incredibly frustrating to watch boy bands in China get their grimy little hands on the Galaxy while I am sitting here starving with my G1 which is getting older and older by the day.

Everyday I have been scouring Google News Timeline searching to see if anyone has a date for the drop, when I came across this post from CNET.

CNET is reporting that they received this black box in the mail, and upon opening it, found a UFO saucer shaped USB speaker inside, underneath the word, “Samsung Galaxy S, Landing Soon”.  Alas there is no date as of yet, but this is a good sign that we are getting closer to a release date here in the US.

Check out the full article over at CNET, and keep your fingers crossed with me that my new toy will drop soon!
