When Google and HTC launched the HTC Dream on September 23rd, 2008 they also released Android OS 1.0. This was a basic operating system and was built on the foundation of being “open”. Since this date Google’s mobile OS has exploded. The most recent numbers that Google announced were from last week – they are now seeing 850,000 Android activations on a daily basis, the Android Market has over 450,000 apps and 1 billion app downloads are happening every month. Larry Page, Google’s CEO, said “Android is quite simply mind boggling”.

Over the years we’ve seen Google release various flavours of the Android OS, all named in alphabetical order and referencing some tasty treat: Cupcake (v1.5), Donut (v2.0), Eclair (v2.1), Froyo (Frozen Yogourt) (v2.2), Gingerbread (v2.3), Honeycomb (v3.0), and most recently Ice Cream Sandwich (v4.0). The next major Android upgrade will most likely be sometime later this year and rumoured to be OS 5.0 Jelly Bean. Google hasn’t commented, but ASUS somewhat confirmed this name to be true.

What could be next for Google’s OS? How about Key Lime Pie. The Verge has been tipped that following the Android OS 5.0 Jelly Bean upgrade Google will bring OS Key Lime Pie to the masses. No word on what version of OS it’ll be, nor features or a release date. Just that Key Lime Pie (KLP) is possibly the next OS name.

Most Android users, 58.1% of them, are still on OS 2.3 Gingerbread. At last count only 1% have 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich installed. In the meantime we patiently wait for Google to announce the Jelly Bean OS, then for the ceremonial statue to arrive on their front lawn.

Rumours around what could be the upcoming Google Nexus device have started up again today. Previous thoughts were that LG or HTC had been granted the rights to develop the next generation of Nexus Android, this was also once pegged with the name as the “Nexus 4G”. Today, BGR is reporting that Google and Samsung will be teaming up to create what might be called the “Google Nexus Prime” (that’s the internal code name at Google). According to the source, the Prime will come with a Texas Instruments OMAP 4460 dual-core processor, have “a monster 720p -resolution display” that’s named “Super AMOLED HD” and run the upcoming Android Ice Cream Sandwich OS.

Probably the most interesting part of the rumour, and what makes the LG and HTC rumour come to life, is how Google might release several higher end Google devices across various carriers at the same time. BGR noted that “Our source indicated that Google could be working with multiple carriers and multiple OEMs on their own “exclusive” Android 4.0 (Ice Cream Sandwich) halo devices, and that they may all launch around the same time.

Another day, another rumour…

Of course we already know that Logitech is creating a companion box so that you can add Google TV to your existing HDTV. Now we know some more of the functionality that they are going to include in the box – such as turning your Android phone into device to control any of your entertainment center components that use IR remotes.

This functionality is called Harmony Link, and it honestly looks like something that could be a big deal. If you are a home theater enthusiast, you probably have many different components with many different remotes floating around. The idea of a Logitech Harmony remote is that you can get rid of all your device remotes and converge them into one high quality device. Usually this would cost you from 9 – 0 depending on the model Logitech remote you bought. Now with Harmony Link you will be able to install an App to your Android handset that will have the same kind of functionality as a Harmony Remote!

This is a very cool development for HTPC enthusiasts who own Android handsets. As you can see in the picture to the left, you have a Motorola droid and a Nexus One running the Harmony Link app. Want to control your HTPC setup from your coach with one remote? Yeah, there is an app for that, but it ISN’T on the iPhone.

Win one of seven Motorola droid handsets being given out! Click here to see how it works!

Tidal Pool Software today is proud to announce the release of Receipts 2.0 for iPhone and iPod touch. Receipts organizes and tracks your business and personal expenses (including car mileage). This major update includes new support for capturing multiple receipt photos, attaching a voice memo to a receipt, and uploading expense reports to Google Docs and Evernote.

Receipts is the most customizable expense tracking app on the App Store. Create accounts, categories, and five different types of custom receipt fields for local taxes, payment information, or anything else you want to track with your receipts.

Add new receipts quickly with an optimized user interface that requires fewer taps. Enter receipt details, one or multiple receipt photos (with cropping support), and even record a voice memo. Receipts can be added in any world currency with totals always available in your home currency.

Browse through the overview graphs to keep track of your spending. See how much money is spent on each account, category, unit (currency/mileage), and over time. Filter the results by account, category, unit, or time interval.
