  • Nokia’s Answer to iTenna Grips and Phone Holds to iPhone 4

NokiaAtenna.gifApple had mentioned Nokia in their press conference today regarding the iPhone 4. Nokia issued a statement on it’s own antenna design and function. They say that they have studied how people hold their phones, use specific materials and location of antenna. Just a few years ago it was common to see mobile phones with visible antenna, this style has been changed so that the mobile phone looks nicer.

*Nokia has invested thousands of man hours in studying human behavior, including how people hold their phones for calls, music playing, web browsing and so on. As you would expect from a company focused on connecting people, we prioritize antenna performance over physical design if they are ever in conflict.

In general, antenna performance of a mobile device/phone may be affected with a tight grip, depending on how the device is held. That’s why Nokia designs our phones to ensure acceptable performance in all real life cases, for example when the phone is held in either hand. Nokia has invested thousands of man hours in studying how people hold their phones and allows for this in designs, for example by having antennas both at the top and bottom of the phone and by careful selection of materials and their use in the mechanical design.

As you read through that, you probably noticed a few gems. Like how Nokia was “the pioneer of internal antennas.” We’re not going to say that they weren’t, not by any means, but let’s just try to stay focused. A comment that’s more on track would be something like this: “we prioritize antenna performance over physical design if they are ever in conflict.”

    Jobs’ held a press conference
today in which he offered free cases and

  • Phone Halo Uses GPS to Hunt Down Lost Keys, Other Valuables

You know you’ve done it.  Somewhere along the line you left your keys or wallet somewhere and had that panic moment where you didn’t think you would ever see them again.  Wouldn’t it be nice if you could just pull out your phone and find exact coordinates on a Google Map?  What if your keys sent you a tweet if you left them behind?  Phone Halo makes these things possible.

Phone Halo, the application, is free for Android phones however it requires the one-time purchase of a Halo Device, about each.  It’s not a terribly bad price for peace of mind.  How badly do you need to guard those work keys or those launch codes?  I’d like to think Marcellus Wallace would have loved having Phone Halo for that briefcase in Pulp Fiction.

The GPS device runs about seven days on a charge and comes with a USB charger, Quick Start Guide, and Product Manual. Configurations include having your phone lock up on you when you are about to leave your valuables behind or sending a silent notification.  Phone Halo also takes proactive steps to help you recover misplaced and lost items with texted and/or emailed GPS coordinates.  It’s also possible to share this information with your friends, family, and other contacts to help track your stuff down.

For more information, head to Phone Halo’s website.

  • Rumor Mill: MetroPCS landing Motorola Android phone

MetroPCS (NYSE:PCS) is preparing to enter into the Android game with the launch of a smartphone made by Motorola (NYSE:MOT), according to leaked pictures and descriptions from the blog AndroidGuys.

Cellular South has begun advertising the Motorola Milestone. The unnamed device is reported to run on Android 2.1 and Motorola’s MotoBLUR user interface. The device has a slide-out Qwerty keyboard and a 3-megapixel camera. There is no rumored price or release date. A MetroPCS spokesman declined to comment and a Motorola spokeswoman did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

If confirmed, it would be the latest example of Google’s mobile platform moving to smaller, regional carriers. Last month regional wireless operator Cincinnati Bell introduced its new Android-powered Blaze smartphone for after a rebate and with a two-year service contract. Additionally, Cellular South said yesterday it will be launching the Motorola Milestone (better known as the Motorola Droid in the United States) later this summer.

MetroPCS’ chief prepaid rival, Leap Wireless (NASDAQ:LEAP), has not formally announced its first Android phone, but the carrier is expected to support the Kyocera Zio M6000 later this year.
